Reconciliation
It is all of our parts to work towards reconciliation, and the implementation of the Truth in Reconciliation Commission is helping with this. The non-Indigenous community must understand that most of the land they live on and own is not historically theirs and once belonged to specific Indigenous communities. Institutions like our education system need to change so that younger generations do not learn that the settlers of Canada "did nothing wrong”. Indigenous people are still overrepresented in the justice system and this needs to change. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission says that in order for reconciliation to happen in Canada, “there has to be awareness of the past, an acknowledgement of the harm that has been inflicted, atonement for the causes, and action to change behaviour." Together Canada must work towards reconciliation.
